Copa Hong Kong And Versus Gym

Jason, Makato and Rhandee (LtoR)

Rhandee and Jason went to Hong Kong to compete in grappling competition which was held in Hong Kong.

Rhandee fought (under 76 kg white/blue) losing his first match by 2 points to a sweep.

Jason fought (under 76 kg purple/brown/black) winning his first match with an armbar and losing semi final to Makato Aramaki ( Black belt and multiple BJJ Champion) and third placing match to Brad Ku( Brown belt and multiple BJJ Champion). Leaving Jason a medaless fourth place.

Nevertheless, a job well done.

They also had the luxury of training with Rodrigo Caporal and Quinton at Versus Performance Gym. The guys strongly recommend anyone to visit the gym if you are ever in town.

Finding the right school

Go for the free trial class!!! You have nothing to lose, just few hours of your precious time.

If you go for the trial class, you would know whether the school is suitable or not.
Still not sure , go for all the trial class from each school and then decide.

Choosing a school based on fees is a wrong way about doing it.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu School charges AT LEAST $100 per month all over around the world. That is the going fee. That will give you better insight of much BJJ school charges.

The right way to choosing a school is to see the environment it provides, allows you to improve in a comfortable level.

These factors are:
1) level of instructions provided by the instructor (Do you understand? Furthermore, can you implement it?)
2) general behaviour of the academy (are they friendly? overly competitive ? helpful?)
3) location (accessibility by transport)
4) facilities (spacious, mats, shower facilities)

I hope this will help you choose a school most suitable for you.

Tribute to Glen

19 Apr 2010
Glen (Black) was responsible for all the photographs that was taken on the day of the seminar.
He had to juggle between taking photos and practising techniques and constantly obliging to everyone's request in taking photo with John. Photos were very well taken. Thanks!!!
On top of that, Glen works very very hard on the mat. Only less than 2 months of training he was already beating guys who were training more than six months who had prior training else where before coming to our school. Regardless whether he is winning or losing, Glen is always coming back for more. Even after class Glen will try to squeeze in a few more grappling sessions. He is a good example of the famous saying "more time you put on the mat, the better you get". Reason he improves so much is because he is actually putting more time on the mat whether it is before or after class.
Keep it up!!!

Getting a Blue belt..... six new blue belts!!!!!

18 apr 2010
John was at our seminar giving a speech about achieving level of a blue belt after awarding six blue belts. Many people have the perception BJJ blue belt is insignifcant just like any color belt before achieving the black and especially it is the first color belt after white. But they do not know to be a blue belt takes lots lots lots of hard sweat and dedication on the mat. Countless of hours grappling. Some have said "getting a blue belt in BJJ is harder than getting a black belt ..." So what is the criteria to be a blue?

First, proficient in the art.
You have to understand well enough to teach and be proficient in the art.

Second,be respectful
Grappling is a tough sport which it might bring out the best or worst in us. But being respectful, it will put things back to perspective. As a blue belt, one should set a good example or role model to others

Third, responsible
Blue belt should also be responsible of the safety of his peers and their growth in the art.

Congrats to Richard Betts (Black Gi), Ivan Chua (third from the left, top row), Nicholas Yong (fifth from the left, top row) Maher (with the Goatie), Jeff Devens (second from the left , bottom row), Matthew Simon Chua (camouflage gi).

Very Well Deserved!!!
