What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or Gracie Jiu Jitsu is a martial art that emphasizes on effectiveness rather than elegance. Through the years of trial and error, the Gracie family created their own style of Ju Jitsu (Japanese martial art ). The Gracies, who were naturally small in stature, polished the art to suit them by removing ineffective moves and modifying those that were retained. Eventually, they developed a whole new art which emphasized primarily on ground fighting. After 60 years, they were brought to international scene when one of the Gracies by the name of Royce, took part in a No Holds Barred Competition called UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). The competition had eight fighters from different styles pited against each other. Despite being the smallest, Royce easily swept past his opponents and took the title. Royce defended his title in UFC2 and UFC 4 . Due to its effectiveness, most martial arts practitioners converted to learning their art or incorporated the moves into their own martial art.

What is the essence of BJJ?

The objective of BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) practioner is to bring his opponent to the ground and finish the fight from there. Once the desired position is attained and consolidated, the BJJ practioner is able to hit them with lesser possibility of being hit back severely. With the aid of the ground, he or she will be able to control the fight and easily apply submission moves such as chokes, armlocks and leglocks. Any of these moves would render the opponent helpless. Thus, making it easier to finish the fight if not finished yet.

BJJ Made History!!!

When Royce Gracie defeated every of his opponent on the ground, many martial art practitioners realised the importance of groundfighting. A question was in everyone’s mind. Why is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu so effective? The reason is most fighters are clueless once they reach on the ground regardless what Stand up* style they practice. Punches and kicks are not as effective on the ground as it is standing up and submission moves are much more practical. All these factors adding up would mean a whole new “ball game” for these Non BJJ practitioner. Not to forget the fact that BJJ practitioner trained mostly on the ground and in a more realistic environment. Therefore once they hit the ground, a BJJ practitoner will have a great advantage. *(Refers to martial arts which relies only on punching and kicking from standing up and has no groundfighting)
